β Jace Launcher
A desktop launcher for Minecraft: Java Edition, written in Python and Qt (PySide6).
Features
- Every Java Edition version: releases, snapshots, betas and alphas, from Mojang's version manifest.
- Mod loaders: Fabric, Quilt, Forge, NeoForge and Legacy Fabric (1.3β1.13).
- Java is handled for you: each version gets the Java runtime Mojang ships for it (Java 8, 16, 17 or 21). You can also point it at your own Java.
- Instances: every instance has its own folder for mods, saves, resource packs and shaders. Versions, libraries and assets are downloaded once and shared between instances.
- Instance shortcuts: right-click an instance and choose Create shortcut, or use the instance's Settings. You get a desktop and Start menu / Launchpad / applications-menu shortcut that starts that instance straight away, with no launcher window.
- Per-instance settings: window size, memory, Java and JVM arguments.
- Synced folders: share worlds, resource packs, shaders, screenshots and schematics between instances (each instance's Sync tab). New instances sync resource packs, shaders and screenshots by default. Under Settings β Synced folders you can move the shared folder into Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive to sync between computers. Uses folder links on Linux and macOS, and junctions on Windows (no admin rights needed).
- Instance icons: choose any image, or design one in the Icon builder (shape, colors and gradients, text, symbols, or any Minecraft block or item texture). Modpacks use their own icon automatically.
- Modrinth: search and install mods, modpacks, resource packs and shaders. Results are filtered to the selected instance's version and loader, and required dependencies are installed automatically.
- Mod updates: Check for updates on an instance's Mods tab finds newer compatible versions (even for mods you added by hand, matched by file hash on Modrinth). Update all installs them and keeps disabled mods disabled.
- Dependencies: missing required dependencies are installed automatically when you install a mod, add a jar by hand, or check for updates, including dependencies of dependencies.
- CurseForge (optional): the same browsing once you add a free API key in Settings.
- Already installed? In Browse, mods, resource packs and shaders already in the selected instance show a red Delete button instead of Install. That includes ones you added by hand. Click it to remove the item from the instance. Modpacks always show Install.
- Modpacks: install from either site, or import a
.mrpackor CurseForge.zipfile. - Skin and cape changer:
- front and back preview with the cape shown
- Classic or Slim arm model
- upload a skin from a file, or copy any player's skin by username
- reset to the default skin
- equip any cape you own, or wear none
- a local skin library you can apply with a double-click
- Accounts: Microsoft sign-in, plus offline accounts for singleplayer and offline-mode servers.
- Friends list: add friends by Minecraft username and see their skin. Save the server they play on to see if they're online there, and click Join to launch straight into it. There's no Jace Launcher server, so "online" only works on servers that share their player list.
- Game log window, plus per-instance memory, Java and JVM argument overrides.
Running
./run.sh
The first run creates .venv and installs requirements.txt. To run it by hand:
python3 -m venv .venv && .venv/bin/pip install -r requirements.txt
.venv/bin/python -m jace
You need Python 3.10 or newer. You don't need Java installed.
Downloads for Windows, macOS and Linux
GitHub Actions builds every platform, because PyInstaller can't build Windows or Mac apps from Linux. The workflow is in .github/workflows/build.yml.
| Platform | File | Install |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 | JaceLauncher-<ver>-windows-x64.exe | Run it; a setup wizard installs it (no admin needed). It also runs under Wine/Bottles, which CI tests. |
| macOS 12+ (Apple Silicon) | JaceLauncher-<ver>-macos-arm64.app.zip | Safari unzips it to Jace Launcher.app in Downloads. Open it and a setup wizard installs it (see below). |
| macOS 12+ (Intel) | JaceLauncher-<ver>-macos-x86_64.app.zip | Same as above. |
| Linux | JaceLauncher-<ver>-x86_64.AppImage | Run it; the setup wizard does the rest (see below). |
Every push to main builds all of these; download them from the run's Artifacts. Pushing a version tag also publishes a GitHub Release:
git tag v1.0.0 && git push origin v1.0.0
The first launch on every platform asks you to add your accounts. Settings β Delete Jace Launcher works on every platform. On Windows you can also uninstall from Settings β Apps β Installed apps.
Installing is required: the downloaded AppImage, .app and .exe only run the setup wizard. Cancelling setup closes the app. After installing, the installed copy starts and the download is removed where possible.
Updates: when a new release is published, an Update to vX button appears in the bottom bar. You can also use Settings β Updates β Check for updates. One click downloads the new version, replaces the installed app and restarts it. Your instances, worlds and accounts are kept.
Windows setup wizard
Running the downloaded .exe opens the same wizard as on Linux and macOS:
- add your accounts
- choose the install folder (default
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Jace Launcher, no admin needed) - choose a Start menu entry, a desktop shortcut, an "Installed apps" entry and a
jace-launcherterminal command - installs, starts the installed copy, and deletes the downloaded file
Unsigned builds: the apps aren't signed with paid Apple or Microsoft certificates, so:
- macOS says the app "can't be opened". Right-click it, choose Open, then Open again (only needed once). On macOS 15 and newer, go to System Settings β Privacy & Security β Open Anyway instead.
- Windows SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC". Click More info β Run anyway.
To build on a Mac or Windows PC yourself, install the requirements plus pyinstaller pillow, then run python packaging/build.py.
macOS setup wizard
When you open Jace Launcher.app from Downloads (or anywhere it isn't installed yet), a setup wizard:
- signs in to your accounts
- lets you choose where to install:
/Applications,~/Applications, or any other folder - can add the app to the Dock and your desktop, and add a
jace-launcherTerminal command - removes the "downloaded from the internet" flag, so macOS won't later say the app is "damaged"
- registers the app with Launchpad and Spotlight, starts the installed copy, and removes the leftover copy in Downloads
Dragging the app into Applications yourself also works. Settings β Delete Jace Launcher removes the app, its Dock icon and its shortcuts.
AppImage and installer
Build a single-file AppImage that includes Python, Qt and everything else:
./packaging/build_appimage.sh # -> dist/JaceLauncher-<version>-x86_64.AppImage
The first time you run the AppImage, a setup wizard opens. It:
- signs in to your accounts (Microsoft or offline)
- lets you choose where to install (default
~/Applications) - adds Jace Launcher to the applications menu, creates a desktop shortcut and adds a
jace-launcherterminal command - installs AppStream metadata (
~/.local/share/metainfo), which software centers use to describe apps
You can also run it from a terminal:
./JaceLauncher-x86_64.AppImage --install --yes # install with defaults, no wizard
./JaceLauncher-x86_64.AppImage --uninstall # remove (keeps your worlds)
./JaceLauncher-x86_64.AppImage --uninstall --purge # remove everything
To uninstall from the desktop, right-click the app in the menu and choose Uninstall Jace Launcher, or use Settings β Desktop integration.
Getting into an app store
GNOME Software and KDE Discover only list apps from a package source: apt, Flatpak/Flathub or Snap. A local AppImage can't add itself to them. To appear there:
- Flathub (what GNOME Software shows by default): package the app as a Flatpak and send a submission to Flathub's review. The AppStream metainfo this project generates is the file Flathub needs. It currently has no
<url type="homepage">because there's no website yet. - AppImageHub (appimage.github.io): open a pull request with the AppImage's download URL. AppImage stores like Gear Lever and AppImagePool then list it.
- Snap Store: package it with
snapcraft.
Where things are stored
| Path | Contents |
|---|---|
~/.jacelauncher/game | Shared versions, libraries, assets and Java runtimes |
~/.jacelauncher/instances/<name>/minecraft | One instance's game folder (mods, saves, β¦) |
~/.jacelauncher/skins | Your skin library |
~/.jacelauncher/accounts.json | Account tokens (keep this private) |
On Windows the folder is %APPDATA%\.jacelauncher. To use a different location, set JACE_LAUNCHER_HOME.
CurseForge
CurseForge's API requires a key. Get one for free at https://console.curseforge.com, then paste it into Settings β Integrations. Some authors don't allow launchers to download their files. The launcher respects that setting, so it lists those files for you to download by hand.

Changelog
- About half the camera delay in Minecraft Education on Linux. While the game is open, Jace Launcher asks your system for the Performance power profile (power-profiles-daemon), and it switches back on its own when you close the game. On a laptop set to Balanced, the emulator, Android's frame encoder and the game were all waiting on low CPU clocks. Measured from an input to the picture changing, the median delay dropped from about 213 ms to about 122 ms.

- Less mouse lag in Minecraft Education on Linux. Android compresses every frame of the game window in software, on a single thread. On smaller PCs, that encoder was saturated at 1280Γ720, so frames queued up behind it and the mouse lagged.
- On those PCs Android now renders at 1024Γ576 (the same shape as your monitor), and the stream uses a lower bitrate.
- PCs with 8+ CPU threads and 16 GB+ RAM still get 1920Γ1080.

Changelog
- Minecraft Education on Linux lags much less. Android's preinstalled Google apps (YouTube, YouTube Music, Gmail, the Google app, Messages, Docs, Photos and more) ran in the background and filled the virtual tablet's memory, so it swapped while you played.
- Jace Launcher now turns those apps off in its emulator. This can be undone, and the Play Store, Play services, Chrome and the keyboard stay on.
- It also clears background apps before the game starts.
- Android's swap use dropped from about 900 MB to about 350 MB.
- No black bars in full screen. Android's screen now has the same shape as your monitor (for example, 1280Γ720 on a 1920Γ1080 screen), or as your game window if you set a size. If the shape changes, Android restarts once to apply it.

Changelog
- Minecraft Bedrock on Windows. Bedrock instances play the official Minecraft for Windows. If it isn't installed, Play opens its Microsoft Store page and continues once it's installed. Worlds and packs from Browse and the instance's tabs go into the game's own folder.
- Minecraft Education on Windows and macOS. Education instances use Microsoft's official app. On Play, Jace Launcher downloads it from Microsoft, installs it (silently on Windows, into Applications on macOS) and keeps it updated.
- Minecraft Education on Linux runs much faster. The virtual tablet is now sized for your PC:
- Its screen is 1280Γ800 (1920Γ1200 on PCs with 8+ CPU threads and 16 GB+ RAM).
- Its RAM and CPU cores fit what you have, so your PC no longer swaps.
- Android's animations are off.
- On a 6-thread, 8 GB laptop it went from about 10 to about 48 FPS.

- Minecraft Education no longer shows a black screen. Android now draws with ANGLE on your GPU's Vulkan (the emulator's GuestAngle mode). The emulator's default OpenGL ES 3.0 couldn't run the game's renderer.
- Just press Play. The first time, Jace Launcher sets up the Android emulator (you accept the Android SDK License), then installs Minecraft Education from Google Play by itself. You no longer need the Setup tab.
- Google sign-in gets its own small window. If Android isn't signed in to Google yet, Google Play opens on the Minecraft Education page in a small window. Once you're signed in, Jace Launcher presses Install for you.
- New game window. The emulator runs without its own window, and the game appears in a clean scrcpy window:
- no emulator toolbar
- no "not responding" prompts while Android starts
- Android's "isn't responding" and "Viewing full screen" pop-ups are turned off
- Real full screen. There's no bar and no black screen, and Gamescope isn't needed anymore.
- In the game, the keyboard and mouse act like real ones plugged into the tablet. Press Left Alt to free the mouse.
